Hearing Aid Maintenance

How to look after your hearing aid

Keeping your hearing aid clean and in good working condition, will allow you to get the most out of it. Learn how to perform some of the most basic hearing aid maintenance skills, and troubleshooting to prevent malfunctions, by watching some of these short videos and looking over the general tips below:

  • The hearing aids are colour coded, with the red for right ear and blue for your left. Before putting them in your ear, look for the markers that indicate which ear the device is designed for. Putting the hearing aid in the wrong ear can cause damage to the device.

  • Use the removal line on the hearing aids when you take the hearing aids out of your ear and try not to pull on tube or wire where possible.

  • Make cleaning and checking your hearing aids as a part of your daily routine.

  • Wipe down your hearing aids with a dry cloth or tissue when you take them out for the day

  • Use a brush to gently brush over the tip of your earmould or in-the-ear aid, to brush away wax or dirt from the hole where the sound comes out. This avoids the hearing aid being blocked with wax and therefore ensures the sound is not blocked.

  • Avoid getting your hearing aids wet, don’t wear them in the shower or heavy rain.

  • When you are not wearing your hearing aids, put them in its case.
